Our recent collaboration with Dutch rock legends Normaal to celebrate their 50th anniversary is a shining example of how AI can elevate traditional art forms, allowing even the most ambitious ideas to come to life. Held in a quarry in Achterhoek, where Normaal performs annually, this year’s show carried special significance.
Bringing the Vision to Life: From Concept to Creation
The concept was as bold as it was unique—a golden chicken soars across the screen (a nod to Achterhoek’s local tradition of shooting a wooden chicken), bumps into Achterhoek’s flag and knocks it down. Behind it, a representation of Mount Rushmore is unveiled, only instead of featuring the American presidents- you see the band members’ faces. To achieve this vision, we maintained a delicate balance of traditional hand-drawn artistry and AI techniques throughout the entire process, creating great synergy between art and technology.
The Power of Deepfake and Blending Technology
To bring this ambitious vision to life, we began with old photographs of Normaal’s band members. These images were carefully expanded and upscaled using Photoshop to enhance their quality. But that was just the beginning. We then turned to Leonardo.ai, a powerful tool that allowed us to seamlessly blend these upscaled images with a digital rendering of Mount Rushmore. The result? A perfect fusion of historical imagery and modern technology.
We didn’t stop there. Using AI deepfake technology, we breathed life into these static images. The once still faces of the band members, now etched into stone, began to speak and move, adding a surreal, lifelike quality to the animation. To achieve this, we combined the Rushmore image with a video of our lead actor saying the full script, syncing the sound and motion perfectly to the band members’ faces. It was as if the statues themselves had come alive, speaking directly to the audience.
3D Rendering Meets Hand-Drawn Artistry
The Achterhoek flag was another key element of this project, and we rendered it in stunning 3D to add a layer of realism to the animation. This wasn’t just about making the flag look good—it was about making it feel real, as if it was truly unfurling on screen, ready to reveal the climactic surprise of the animation.
Meanwhile, the golden chicken, the star of the show, was hand-drawn frame by frame. The fluidity and expressiveness of the chicken’s movements were a testament to how AI can enhance, rather than replace, the timeless skills of human artists. By combining 3D rendering with hand-drawn animation, we created a visual experience that was both deeply rooted in tradition and pushed the boundaries of modern technology.

When the animation was finally broadcasted in front of 12,000 fans at Normaal’s 50th-anniversary celebration, it was clear that AI didn’t just serve as a tool in this project—it was a true creative partner. The intricate dance between AI’s computational power and human creativity allowed us to honor Normaal’s legacy in a way that was both innovative and respectful of their roots.
The final animation was a visual spectacle, showcasing what’s possible when traditional artistry and AI come together. The fusion of deep learning with hand-drawn techniques resulted in an animation that felt both timeless and high-tech, a fitting tribute to a band just as timeless.
