“Is there actually a European alternative to ChatGPT?” is a question we get weekly. The answer is yes, with nuance. This overview lists the serious options per category, with the honest caveats attached.
Why consider an alternative
The short version: data at American providers falls under the CLOUD Act regardless of server location, and the EU AI Act asks for transparency that is easier to deliver on European or self-hosted infrastructure. The full reasoning is in our article on sovereign AI.
Category 1: European AI assistants (SaaS)
- Mistral / Le Chat (France). The most complete European alternative: a capable chat assistant, strong models and business plans. For most office applications a direct ChatGPT replacement.
- Aleph Alpha (Germany). Focused on government and regulated sectors, with an emphasis on explainability and sovereign deployment.
- Proton Lumo (Switzerland). Privacy-first assistant from the makers of Proton Mail; strong where confidentiality outweighs feature breadth.
The practical test: have your team do its own tasks in a European assistant for a week. The gap almost always turns out smaller than expected.
Category 2: open models in European cloud
Open(-source) models, including Mistral’s models and European initiatives like EuroLLM, run with European cloud providers such as OVHcloud, Scaleway, IONOS or Hetzner. You get modern model quality while data stays in the EU under EU law. This is the route we implement most often for organisations that want more than SaaS but no server room.
Category 3: on-premises
For the most sensitive processes, compact open models now run fine on your own hardware. Maximum control, no data leaving the building. Since small models became strong, this fits SME budgets too; see our EU Development approach.
Decision guide
- General office work, low sensitivity: European SaaS assistant (category 1). Done in a week.
- Business processes with customer or company data: open models in European cloud (category 2).
- Crown jewels: medical, legal or strategic data: on-premises (category 3).
The honest caveat
If you are used to the absolute frontier of American models, you will notice a difference on some tasks. The relevant question is not “what is the best model in the world” but “what does this application need”. For the vast majority of business AI use, summarising, writing, customer questions, document processing, that difference is negligible in 2026; for a few specialist tasks it is not. Making that distinction is exactly the work.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a full European alternative to ChatGPT?
For most business applications, yes. Mistral (Le Chat) is the most complete European alternative, and open models running in EU cloud or on-premises cover the rest. American models still lead on a few frontier features; the question is whether your applications need them.
Why choose a European AI alternative?
Three reasons: your data falls under European law instead of the American CLOUD Act, transparency towards the EU AI Act is easier to deliver, and you reduce dependence on the pricing and product decisions of a single American provider.
What does switching to European AI cost?
Switching to European SaaS mostly costs migration attention. Self-hosting is an implementation project: count on a custom build from EUR 15,000, depending on the application. An organisation scan makes the business case concrete up front.
